Original paintings of candles and flames go on show in Norwich art gallery.
Norwich Art Gallery
Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall is best known for her colourful paintings of ice creams. amusements arcades and all the other 'Kiss Me Quick' sights associated with the traditional British seaside holiday. However, a new body of work sees her art take on a quieter, more contemplative theme - the candle and the naked flame. In these new works, she depicts candles against different coloured backgrounds, exploring how the different settings (and also the different coloured candle waxes) affect the intensity and glow of the luminous flame.
Candle Paintings
These new original paintings of candles have a sense of peace and calm about them. To some art lovers they invoke religious spirituality or remembrance of those lost and sadly missed, while others are reminded of the romance of the candlelit dinner for two, or see the glowing light as a beacon of hope and a way of brightening a dark, cruel world. But then isn't that the very essence of art? It allows us the time to stop and stare and see what we want to see, or perhaps even what we need to see. It attracts, magnetises and compels us to look - much like the beauty of a naked flame.
Jane Hall's candlelight paintings are currently available at the Crome Gallery, 33 Elm Hill, Norwich, NR3 1HG.

Night-time Paintings of Convenience Stores By Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall
The lights in convenience shop window might seem like an unlikely subject for art, but not to Norfolk artist Jane Hall.
Norfolk Art Exhibitions
Jane Hall's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' series of paintings take an unusual and highly individual look at the seaside town in which she lives and works. Rather than focusing on the colourful seafront sights for which the town is best known, they take as their subjects the back streets and side streets of Yarmouth. It is here Jane finds her artistic inspiration in the town's many convenience stores, kebab shops, Chinese takeaways and launderettes. And what makes these buildings stand out to her? It appears to be the hopeful glimmer of light.
Great Yarmouth Gallery
That glimmer of light might be coming from the interior of a convenience store, or it might be the glowing signage illuminating an otherwise bleak-looking fish and chip shop doorway. But it always suffuses the painting with an ethereal glow and acts like a beacon in the murky darkness - a beacon designed to pull the punters in to buy a portion of chips, a can of lager or whatever is on special offer that day.
The 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' series of original paintings provides an exciting contrast to Jane's more familiar pictures of ice cream cones and amusement arcades. They show the real side of Yarmouth - the one where the natives live and which the holidaymakers seldom see. It is a world of grit and darkness, but always with hopeful glimmers of intense light, which these paintings capture perfectly.
Jane Hall's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' are currently on show at Harvey Wilson's Secret Gallery, 33a Market Row, Great Yarmouth, as part of the 'Seaside Seductions' exhibition running till September 9th. They can also be viewed online at www.jane-hall.co.uk.

Jane Hall's Soho Sex Shop Paintings Act As A Reminder Of London's Disappearing History
The closure of numerous Soho sex shops adds extra value to Great Yarmouth artist's paintings.
Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall
When Jane Hall started painting sex shops paintings for a solo show at the Reading Room in Soho's Frith Street in 2012, she had no idea how quickly London's changing landscape would trigger the closure of so many of the stores she chose to paint. Established sex shops and strip joints that had been a feature of Soho for years and years quickly began to close their doors. Cursed by crippling license fees, the boom in Internet sex toys and clean up campaigns, these colourful, vibrant and enticing stores were suddenly replaced by endless coffee shops, clothes boutiques and convenience stores.
Soho Sex Shop Paintings
"It's amazing how many of these shops have gone now," says Jane, just back from a trip to London. "Places like Janus, the Private Shop, Trashy Lingerie and Lovejoy's were thriving just a few years ago, but now they're gone forever - and have been placed with something much more bland. In fact, it's bizarre that a place like London doesn't have a booming sex shop industry, because everywhere else I go to in Europe really celebrates that kind of thing. But then we've always been a very prudish nation, so I guess I shouldn't really be surprised."
"It's a shame for me, though," Jane adds, "because sex shops are such exciting things to paint. I love all the neon signage and the seedily erotic window displays, plus the general air of mystery behind the boarded up frontages and rainbow-strip curtains. I guess it's lucky that I painted so many of them when I did, because they appear to be lost forever now. But at least the sex shop paintings still remain as a record of what Soho used to be like."

Artist Jane Hall's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' Go On Show At Great Yarmouth Library
Art lovers still have another week to catch Jane Hall's latest art exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library.
Great Yarmouth Art Gallery
There is more to Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall than colourful paintings of ice creams and fruit machines. Though much of her artistic work is centred on her home town's vibrant and flourshing seaside, she is also inspired by Yarmouth's back streets, cafes, convenience stores and take away shops. Many of these less obvious subjects for paintings are captured on canvas late at night, with the light in a window or the rain on the pavement adding mystery and mood to these striking works of art. They are also mostly painted in a miniature format, which echoes the size of the seaside postcards for which Great Yarmouth is so well known.
Contemporary Norfolk Artist
These new 'postcard-sized' paintings are a step in a new direction for Jane Hall. She explains: 'There were a number of interesting buildings in town that I'd wanted to paint for many years, but for some reason I had never quite found the right way of making them work as paintings. I kept playing around with various ideas for them, then eventually decided to try one in a really small format. It was a picture of the Lucky Star takeaway on St. Peter's Road, and as soon as I did it on a 7x5-inch canvas, I knew I was onto something. The miniature canvas was just the right size to allow me to inject real life into the image; and so I've carried on creating more and more pictures in a similar vein capturing various aspects of this fascinating town.'
Jane Hall's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' series of original paintings is currently on show at the Rumbelow Gallery, which is located upstairs in Great Yarmouth Library. The art exhibition is open daily from 9am to 5pm, with late opening on Wednesday night till 7.30pm. The show runs until Saturday 22nd February 2014 and admission is free.

Jane Hall's Latest Art Exhibition At Great Yarmouth Library Gives Novel Take On The Seaside Postcard
A series of miniature, seaside postcard-size original paintings take centre stage at a new art exhibition in Great Yarmouth.
Art Exhibitions in Great Yarmouth
Norfolk-based artist Jane Hall is probably best known for her bright, Pop Art-style ice cream and fruit machine paintings, but her latest exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library sees her work moving off in an exciting new direction. A series of paintings entitled 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' sees the artist taking the familiar sights of this popular British seaside resort and turning them into 5 x 7-inch orginal paintings, each the size of the traditional seaside postcard. Using acrylic on canvas board, she paints well-known local monuments, such as St Nicholas Church, St George's Theatre, Waterways, Leisureland and The Mint.
Great Yarmouth Gallery
But it's not just the more obvious subjects that feature in this new range of original paintings. Jane Hall also turns her artistic eye to lesser known sights and hidden local treasures, such as the launderette on King Street, the Lucky Star takeaway on St Peter's Road and the Murco petrol station on Northgate Street. Many of these more obscure subjects are captured in night-time scenes in which the play of light in a window adds an extra air of mystery and mood. In paintings such as these the artist seems to be saying that even the most unlikely venue can be turned into a work of art - a convience store, say, or a kebab shop.
The 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' paintings are on display at Great Yarmouth Library until 22nd of February 2014. The show is open every day, except Sundays, with a late night viewing until 7.30pm on Wednesday 19th February 2014. For more information, visit the artist's website at www.jane-hall.co.uk.

Late Night Opening At Great Yarmouth Library For Artist Jane Hall's Seaside Sensation 3
Tonight sees a special late night opening at Great Yarmouth Library for the official opening of local artist Jane Hall's latest seaside-themed show.
Great Yarmouth Paintings
Members of the public are invited to a special late night opening at Great Yarmouth Library this evening, when the Mayor of Great Yarmouth will be officially opening the latest solo art exhibition by artist Jane Hall. Featuring original paintings depicting both the grit and glamour of this popular seaside holiday resort, Seaside Sensation 3 will appeal to all lovers of art, as well as to all Great Yarmouth residents who take an interest in the town in which they live. Many of the paintings take as their subjects popular and instantly recognisable local landmarks, such as Havenbridge House, St. Nicholas Church and St. George's Theatre and seafront arcades including Leisureland and The Mint.
Norfolk Artist Jane Hall
Many of the works in this new exhibition form part of Jane Hall's new series of paintings, Postcards from Great Yarmouth. These new paintings are the same size as traditional seaside postcards; but they don't always depict the kind of obvious image you'd expect to see on a typical 'Wish You Were Here'-style card. A large number of them focus on the back streets and side streets of Great Yarmouth, taking as their subjects such diverse matter as kebab shops, launderettes, convience stores and petrol stations. These unsual choices of subject matter are often depicted late at night, which provides a stark contrast to Jane's bright, vibrant and colourful ice cream and fruit machine paintings also displayed in this fascinating and engaging art exhibition.
The official opening of Seaside Sensation 3 (featuring the 'Postcards from Great Yarmouth' paintings) takes place between 6pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday 12th of February 2014. All members of the public are welcome to attend the opening, and for those who are unable to make it, the exhbition runs daily at Great Yarmouth Library until Saturday the 22nd of Februrary. For full library opening hours, visit the 'Exhibitions' page at www.jane-hall.co.uk.

Great Yarmouth Library Welcomes Third Solo Art Exhibition By Artist Jane Hall
Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall prepares for 3rd major solo show at Great Yarmouth Library.
With just a fortnight to go before the opening of her third solo exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library, Norfolk artist Jane Hall is busy putting the finishing touches to her new 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' series of artworks. These seaside postcard-size paintings of Great Yarmouth street scenes and mounments - each painted on a tiny 5x7-inch canvas - capture a mix of well-known and obscure local landmarks. Among the more familiar subjects are Britannia Pier, St. Nicholas Church and the Fisherman's Cottages, but less obvious subjects include the launderette on King Street, Best London Kebabs on Nelson Road and the petrol station at Asda.
Jane explains: "I am always on the look-out for interesting subjects to paint when I wander round town; and often it's the more obscure subjects that excite me the most. I think it's important to see the artistic merit in run-down buildings, everyday shops like convenience stores and simple things like launderettes. At the right time of night with the light coming from the right angle, these places can look quite spectacular and haunting, which is something I've tried to capture in the night-time scenes I've been working on."
Jane's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' pictures will be shown alongside her familiar ice cream and fruit machines painting at Great Yarmouth Library from 11th - 22 February 2014. The exhibition is open to the public every day except Sunday, with a full list of opening hours available at www.jane-hall.co.uk.

Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall Paints Fruit Machines From Seafront Amusement Arcades
The fruit machines of Leisureland, the Mint, the Flamingo and the Silver Sipper inspire Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall's new original artworks.
Fruit Machine Painting
Forever taking inspiration from the seaside sights of Great Yarmouth, it is the fuit machines of the seaside holiday resort's many amusement arcades that have inspired the latest original artworks by Jane Hall. Those who are familiar with arcades like Leisureland, the Mint, the Silver Slipper and Gold Rush will know them to be bright, colourful places full of neon light and slot machines. The machines flash and twinkle as you wander by them. Winnings rattle loudly into metal trays. It is all designed to draw you in and encourage you to have a go yourself
Orignal Great Yarmouth Pictures
The vibrancy of the slot machines and the life they bring to Great Yarmouth's Marine Parade make them an excellent subject for artist Jane Hall. She has always been fascinated by colourful signage and the way advertising features in the urban landscape. And the big, bold frontages of the slot machines she is now blowing up, in monumental style, manage to be as eye-catching and tempting as the machines in the arcades themselves. This is bold art, owing much to Pop Art, but with a modern sensibility; and with a strong, unmissable link to the seaside resort where Jane Hall lives and works.
The fruit machine paintings of Jane Hall will go on display at Great Yarmouth Library in February 2014. They will be shown alongside her ice cream paintings and other works exploring the Great British seaside holiday as it is today.

Hemsby Hot Dog Painting Captures Spirit of Great British Seaside Holiday
The Norfolk seaside town of Hemsby is full of colouful sights, like this fun plastic hot dog that has now been immortalised forever as an original artwork by Jane Hall.
Hemsby Paintings
The Norfolk-based artist Jane Hall uses her colourful, Pop Art style to capture various aspects of the seaside culture in which she lives. Her hometown of Great Yarmouth and the nearby holiday resort of Hemsby are worlds full of ice creams, amusement arcades, souvenir shops and buckets and spades. They are also worlds full of colourful signage and advertising displays, such as the giant plastic hot dog who squirts himself with sauce on the main strip in Hemsby.
Norfolk Seaside Art
This giant frankfurter, wrapped in his bun, is the subject of an original paining by Jane Hall. Painted in front of a bingo sign on one of Hemsby's many amusement arcades, he dominates the canvas and calls our for attention, just like all good advertising images should. The bright yellow mustard he squirts on his forehead makes a striking contrast to the browns of his flesh and the red of his sleeves. Meanwhile, reflected in the glass behind him, is the jutting edge of the amusment arcade opposite where 'Frank' stands night and day.
'Frank' by Jane Hall is available to purchase at ARTWEB. Click through to Jane Hall's page on the site for details of how to purchase this modern Hemsby seaside picture.

Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall's Ice Cream Paintings For Sale Online In Affordable Art Store
Making a painting look like real ice cream isn't very easy, but artist Jane Hall's new technique has produced some seriously mouth-watering pictures.
Buy Original Art Online
Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall has always taken her inspiration from the Great British seaside that sits on her doorstep. She is known for her paintings of amusement arcades, fish and chip shops, Pleasure Beach rides and ice creams, and it's the latest development in her ice cream paintings that has lately been causing the biggest stir. The Norfolk-based artist has been experimenting with thick layers of paint applied with a palette knife to create images that capture the real texture of ice cream. She has kept these paintings small and affordable; and has now put them for sale online at Jane Hall's Online Ice Cream Parlour.
Original Ice Cream Paintings
Jane says: "Many of my original ice cream paintings weren't really paintings of ice cream at all. They were, in fact, pictures of plastic ice creams used as advertising signage; but lately I've been concentrating more and more on capturing real, edible ice creams in paint. I started off with a Knickerbocker Glory, which worked really well using thicker paint, then I started buying sundaes and 99s from the seafront stores in Yarmouth, Gorleston and Hemsby. I love how paint can look just like ice cream and also like chocolate and strawberry sauce. It means I can create bright, colouful pictures that look just as tasty as the subjects that inspired them."
Jane recently completed an ice cream commission for a Great Yarmouth cafe on Marine Parade. "They wanted images of their own ice creams and desserts on their walls," she explains, "and I would love to do more work like that. But in the meantime, I'm giving everyone the chance to buy one of my ice cream paintings online. I'm keeping them affordable, so if you'd like to buy an ice cream picture, head to my brand new online store."

'99' Ice Cream Painting By Great Yarmouth Seaside Artist Jane Hall
Jane Hall's latest original ice cream painting makes debut in online art store.
Seaside Paintings
Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall is best-known for her paintings of ice creams; and her latest work depicts an absolute classic - the seaside favourite, 99. In this new original painting, a chunky chocolate flake soars out of a luscious scoop of vanilla ice cream, which itself spills over the edges of a crisp wafer cone. The ice cream is depicted against an abstract seaside background, which turns out to be based on Gorleston beach.
Ice Cream Pictures
Jane explains: 'I bought and ate this ice cream on a sunny day on Gorleston seafront, but managed to take a few really good photographs of it before the hot sun made the ice cream melt. I often paint my ice cream pictures from life, but this one melted too quickly for that. But the photos allowed me to recpature the moment once I was back in the studio.'
Jane Hall's 99 ice cream painting is currently available for purchase at her online affordable art store. Click through now to see more of her seaside-themed paintings.

Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall Launches New Online Art Gallery
Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall's popular ice cream paintings are now for sale online...
Ice Cream Paintings
Great Yarmouth-based artist Jane Hall is probably best known for her paintings of the traditional British seaside holiday. Her work tends to feature fish and chip shops, amusement arcades, fun fair rides and, most famously of all, lots of lovely ice creams. And that's why, out of all her work, she has decided to create an online gallery devoted to her ice cream paintings. The new gallery showcases affordable artworks created using a new technique in which thick layers of paint is laid onto the canvas with a palette knife, rather than Jane's traditional brushwork.
Great Yarmouth Art
Jane says: "The use of the palette knife and thicker paint gives these paintings an incredible texture. It makes them look just like real ice cream, and it's been exciting to see my work moving off in this new direction. I've been getting ice creams off the ice cream man almost every day so I can experiment more with this brand new style. It is such a free and expressive way to paint, but at the same time it involves a great amount of control."
Jane Hall's new online ice cream parlour opened just last week, with all work available for a maximum price of £100. Click through now to view the full range of original paintings for sale.

Pukka Pies paintings wow visitors at Jane Hall opening night
Pukka Pie Paintings
PUKKA PIES 1 - acrylic on canvas, £250
Her popular seaside paintings have made her one of Great Yarmouth's best-known artists, but it was her three large paintings of Pukka Pies that made the biggest impact at Jane Hall's opening at the Great Yarmouth Art Gallery. Displayed as a triptych, the bright, vibrant acrylic on canvas Pukka Pies paintings dominated the room and were a talking point all evening. Clearly owing an artistic debt to Andy Warhol and his soup cans, Jane's incredibly realistic paintings of these much-loved pies (sold in fish and chip shops throughout Great Yarmouth) show a level of detail and artistic accuarcy that borders on Photorealism.
PUKKA PIES 2 - acrylic on canvas, £100
Also on display at this latest exhibition were two of Jane's more recent ice cream paintings - and she continues to take artistic inspiration from both the seafront and some of Yarmouth's quieter back streets. But her work will be taking a detour next month, as her exhibition of Soho sex shops opens at Reading Room, Frith Street in London. Although she promises to get back to the seaside soon; and even has more plans for Pukka Pies paintings. "The response to the three paintings was amazing," she said. "Especially the big one! Everyone kept saying it looked good enough to eat."
