Capturing various aspects of the popular seaside town by both day and night, the paintings depict subjects such as the derelict Yarmouth Lock Co building on St Peter's Road and Domino's Pizza on King Street. And then there are the seafront pictures showing Rod's Seafoood stall and the Leisureland amusement arcade.

Art lovers still have another week to catch Jane Hall's latest art exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library.

There is more to Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall than colourful paintings of ice creams and fruit machines. Though much of her artistic work is centred on her home town's vibrant and flourshing seaside, she is also inspired by Yarmouth's back streets, cafes, convenience stores and take away shops. Many of these less obvious subjects for paintings are captured on canvas late at night, with the light in a window or the rain on the pavement adding mystery and mood to these striking works of art. They are also mostly painted in a miniature format, which echoes the size of the seaside postcards for which Great Yarmouth is so well known.

These new 'postcard-sized' paintings are a step in a new direction for Jane Hall. She explains: 'There were a number of interesting buildings in town that I'd wanted to paint for many years, but for some reason I had never quite found the right way of making them work as paintings. I kept playing around with various ideas for them, then eventually decided to try one in a really small format. It was a picture of the Lucky Star takeaway on St. Peter's Road, and as soon as I did it on a 7x5-inch canvas, I knew I was onto something. The miniature canvas was just the right size to allow me to inject real life into the image; and so I've carried on creating more and more pictures in a similar vein capturing various aspects of this fascinating town.'

Jane Hall's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' series of original paintings is currently on show at the Rumbelow Gallery, which is located upstairs in Great Yarmouth Library. The art exhibition is open daily from 9am to 5pm, with late opening on Wednesday night till 7.30pm. The show runs until Saturday 22nd February 2014 and admission is free.

Norfolk-based artist Jane Hall is probably best known for her bright, Pop Art-style ice cream and fruit machine paintings, but her latest exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library sees her work moving off in an exciting new direction. A series of paintings entitled 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' sees the artist taking the familiar sights of this popular British seaside resort and turning them into 5 x 7-inch orginal paintings, each the size of the traditional seaside postcard. Using acrylic on canvas board, she paints well-known local monuments, such as St Nicholas Church, St George's Theatre, Waterways, Leisureland and The Mint.

But it's not just the more obvious subjects that feature in this new range of original paintings. Jane Hall also turns her artistic eye to lesser known sights and hidden local treasures, such as the launderette on King Street, the Lucky Star takeaway on St Peter's Road and the Murco petrol station on Northgate Street. Many of these more obscure subjects are captured in night-time scenes in which the play of light in a window adds an extra air of mystery and mood. In paintings such as these the artist seems to be saying that even the most unlikely venue can be turned into a work of art - a convience store, say, or a kebab shop.

The 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' paintings are on display at Great Yarmouth Library until 22nd of February 2014. Tonight sees a special late night opening at Great Yarmouth Library for the official opening of local artist Jane Hall's latest seaside-themed show.

Members of the public are invited to a special late night opening at Great Yarmouth Library this evening, when the Mayor of Great Yarmouth will be officially opening the latest solo art exhibition by artist Jane Hall. Featuring original paintings depicting both the grit and glamour of this popular seaside holiday resort, Seaside Sensation 3 will appeal to all lovers of art, as well as to all Great Yarmouth residents who take an interest in the town in which they live. Many of the paintings take as their subjects popular and instantly recognisable local landmarks, such as Havenbridge House, St. Nicholas Church and St. George's Theatre and seafront arcades including Leisureland and The Mint.

Many of the works in this new exhibition form part of Jane Hall's new series of paintings, Postcards from Great Yarmouth. These new paintings are the same size as traditional seaside postcards; but they don't always depict the kind of obvious image you'd expect to see on a typical 'Wish You Were Here'-style card. A large number of them focus on the back streets and side streets of Great Yarmouth, taking as their subjects such diverse matter as kebab shops, launderettes, convience stores and petrol stations. These unsual choices of subject matter are often depicted late at night, which provides a stark contrast to Jane's bright, vibrant and colourful ice cream and fruit machine paintings also displayed in this fascinating and engaging art exhibition.

The official opening of Seaside Sensation 3 (featuring the 'Postcards from Great Yarmouth' paintings) takes place between 6pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday 12th of February 2014. Jane Hall's new postcard-sized paintings of Great Yarmouth sights go on exhibition for the very first time.

This month the seafront sights of Great Yarmouth will once again be taking centre-stage in an exhibition of paintings by Yarmouth-based artist Jane Hall. Jane, who lives and works just a stone’s throw from the town’s Golden Mile, is best known for her colourful, Pop Art-influenced paintings of ice creams, amusement arcades, fish and chip shops and roller-coaster rides. “There is so much inspiration right here on my doorstep,” she explains, “and it’s a constantly changing environment. It’s now almost two years since my previous show and so many of the ice cream parlours, restaurants and arcades have either changed hands or updated their signage. It allows me to revisit old places and look at them afresh; and I hope to capture that sense of renewal in the works that these places inspire.”

Just like Yarmouth seafront, Jane’s work has also undergone a sense of renewal in recent months. Although she is still producing monumental ice cream paintings and ‘in your face’ images of fruit machines, she has also been experimenting with the palette knife to produce lush, thick paintings of ice cream sundaes; and with a much smaller canvas size to produce her ‘Postcards from Great Yarmouth’ series. The postcards are miniature 5x7-inch depictions of Great Yarmouth street scenes and local monuments, such as St. Nicholas Church and St. George’s Theatre, often captured at oblique angles. The postcards also allow Jane’s quirky artistic eye to focus on much less obvious choices of subject – for every painting of an amusement arcade, there’s another of a kebab shop, or of a laundrette caught at night-time, or of the lights in a local convenience store.

Jane says: “I’ve tried to explore Great Yarmouth from all angles this time. The seafront is still my main inspiration, but I’ve also tried to see the beauty in the back streets and side streets and even in some of the more run-down places. A lot of these newer paintings show Yarmouth by night; and it’s amazing how what might seem like the most uninspiring of subject by day can look completely different if lit well at night. Even just something as simple as capturing the light in a shop window can make for a beautiful, quiet painting. It might not be what you’d see on a typical seaside postcard, but it can really capture the spirit of a town.”

With just a fortnight to go before the opening of her third solo exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library, Norfolk artist Jane Hall is busy putting the finishing touches to her new 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' series of artworks. These seaside postcard-size paintings of Great Yarmouth street scenes and mounments - each painted on a tiny 5x7-inch canvas - capture a mix of well-known and obscure local landmarks. Among the more familiar subjects are Britannia Pier, St. Nicholas Church and the Fisherman's Cottages, but less obvious subjects include the launderette on King Street, Best London Kebabs on Nelson Road and the petrol station at Asda.

 

Jane explains: "I am always on the look-out for interesting subjects to paint when I wander round town; and often it's the more obscure subjects that excite me the most. I think it's important to see the artistic merit in run-down buildings, everyday shops like convenience stores and simple things like launderettes. At the right time of night with the light coming from the right angle, these places can look quite spectacular and haunting, which is something I've tried to capture in the night-time scenes I've been working on."

 

Jane's 'Postcards From Great Yarmouth' pictures will be shown alongside her familiar ice cream and fruit machines painting at Great Yarmouth Library from 11th - 22 February 2014. For two weeks in February, Great Yarmouth Library will play host to an exhibition of seaside paintings by artist Jane Hall.

Starting February 11th 2014, the walls of Great Yarmouth Library will be brightened up by the colourful seaside paintings of local artist Jane Hall. Her third SEASIDE SENSATION exhibition at the venue will showcase more of her seaside-inspired paintings of ice creams, amusement arcades and fruit machines, as well as a new series of miniature paintings of Great Yarmouth street scenes and town centre monuments called 'Postcards from Great Yarmouth'. These new works are all painted on 5x7-inch canvas boards - the size of the traditional seaside postcard - and feature a mix of quirky subjects, including local kebab shops, laundrettes and convenience stores. Jane also offers an original take on well-known venues, like St. Nicholas Church and St. George's Theatre, by painting them as miniature skyscapes.

The exhibition's official opening will take between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday, February 12th. All members of the public are welcome to attend the opening night for a glass of wine and an evening of fine art.
