Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall Paints Fruit Machines From Seafront Amusement Arcades

The fruit machines of Leisureland, the Mint, the Flamingo and the Silver Sipper inspire Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall's new original artworks.

Norfolk Seaside Artist Jane Hall Puts The Finishing Touches To A Fruit Machine Painting

Fruit Machine Painting

Forever taking inspiration from the seaside sights of Great Yarmouth, it is the fuit machines of the seaside holiday resort's many amusement arcades that have inspired the latest original artworks by Jane Hall. Those who are familiar with arcades like Leisureland, the Mint, the Silver Slipper and Gold Rush will know them to be bright, colourful places full of neon light and slot machines. The machines flash and twinkle as you wander by them. Winnings rattle loudly into metal trays. It is all designed to draw you in and encourage you to have a go yourself

Orignal Great Yarmouth Pictures

The vibrancy of the slot machines and the life they bring to Great Yarmouth's Marine Parade make them an excellent subject for artist Jane Hall. She has always been fascinated by colourful signage and the way advertising features in the urban landscape. And the big, bold frontages of the slot machines she is now blowing up, in monumental style, manage to be as eye-catching and tempting as the machines in the arcades themselves. This is bold art, owing much to Pop Art, but with a modern sensibility; and with a strong, unmissable link to the seaside resort where Jane Hall lives and works.

The fruit machine paintings of Jane Hall will go on display at Great Yarmouth Library in February 2014. They will be shown alongside her ice cream paintings and other works exploring the Great British seaside holiday as it is today.

Hemsby Paintings

The Norfolk-based artist Jane Hall uses her colourful, Pop Art style to capture various aspects of the seaside culture in which she lives. Her hometown of Great Yarmouth and the nearby holiday resort of Hemsby are worlds full of ice creams, amusement arcades, souvenir shops and buckets and spades. They are also worlds full of colourful signage and advertising displays, such as the giant plastic hot dog who squirts himself with sauce on the main strip in Hemsby.

This giant frankfurter, wrapped in his bun, is the subject of an original paining by Jane Hall. Painted in front of a bingo sign on one of Hemsby's many amusement arcades, he dominates the canvas and calls our for attention, just like all good advertising images should. The bright yellow mustard he squirts on his forehead makes a striking contrast to the browns of his flesh and the red of his sleeves. Meanwhile, reflected in the glass behind him, is the jutting edge of the amusment arcade opposite where 'Frank' stands night and day.

'Frank' by Jane Hall is available to purchase at ARTWEB. Click through to Jane Hall's page on the site for details of how to purchase this modern Hemsby seaside picture.

Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall has always taken her inspiration from the Great British seaside that sits on her doorstep. She is known for her paintings of amusement arcades, fish and chip shops, Pleasure Beach rides and ice creams, and it's the latest development in her ice cream paintings that has lately been causing the biggest stir. The Norfolk-based artist has been experimenting with thick layers of paint applied with a palette knife to create images that capture the real texture of ice cream. She has kept these paintings small and affordable; and has now put them for sale online at Jane Hall's Online Ice Cream Parlour.

Original Ice Cream Paintings

Jane says: "Many of my original ice cream paintings weren't really paintings of ice cream at all. They were, in fact, pictures of plastic ice creams used as advertising signage; but lately I've been concentrating more and more on capturing real, edible ice creams in paint. I started off with a Knickerbocker Glory, which worked really well using thicker paint, then I started buying sundaes and 99s from the seafront stores in Yarmouth, Gorleston and Hemsby. I love how paint can look just like ice cream and also like chocolate and strawberry sauce. It means I can create bright, colouful pictures that look just as tasty as the subjects that inspired them."

Jane recently completed an ice cream commission for a Great Yarmouth cafe on Marine Parade. "They wanted images of their own ice creams and desserts on their walls," she explains, "and I would love to do more work like that. But in the meantime, I'm giving everyone the chance to buy one of my ice cream paintings online. I'm keeping them affordable, so if you'd like to buy an ice cream picture, head to my brand new online store."

'99' Ice Cream Painting By Great Yarmouth Seaside Artist Jane Hall

Jane Hall's latest original ice cream painting makes debut in online art store.

Great Yarmouth Artist Jane Hall's 99 Ice Cream Picture

Seaside Paintings

Great Yarmouth artist Jane Hall is best-known for her paintings of ice creams; and her latest work depicts an absolute classic - the seaside favourite, 99. In this new original painting, a chunky chocolate flake soars out of a luscious scoop of vanilla ice cream, which itself spills over the edges of a crisp wafer cone. The ice cream is depicted against an abstract seaside background, which turns out to be based on Gorleston beach.

Ice Cream Pictures

Jane explains: 'I bought and ate this ice cream on a sunny day on Gorleston seafront, but managed to take a few really good photographs of it before the hot sun made the ice cream melt. I often paint my ice cream pictures from life, but this one melted too quickly for that. But the photos allowed me to recpature the moment once I was back in the studio.'

Jane Hall's 99 ice cream painting is currently available for purchase at her online affordable art store. Click through now to see more of her seaside-themed paintings.

Ice Cream Paintings

Great Yarmouth-based artist Jane Hall is probably best known for her paintings of the traditional British seaside holiday. Her work tends to feature fish and chip shops, amusement arcades, fun fair rides and, most famously of all, lots of lovely ice creams. And that's why, out of all her work, she has decided to create an online gallery devoted to her ice cream paintings. The new gallery showcases affordable artworks created using a new technique in which thick layers of paint is laid onto the canvas with a palette knife, rather than Jane's traditional brushwork.

Great Yarmouth Art

Jane says: "The use of the palette knife and thicker paint gives these paintings an incredible texture. It makes them look just like real ice cream, and it's been exciting to see my work moving off in this new direction. I've been getting ice creams off the ice cream man almost every day so I can experiment more with this brand new style. It is such a free and expressive way to paint, but at the same time it involves a great amount of control."

Jane Hall's new online ice cream parlour opened just last week, with all work available for a maximum price of £100. Click through now to view the full range of original paintings for sale.

Pukka Pies paintings wow visitors at Jane Hall opening night

Pukka Pie Paintings

PUKKA PIES 1 - acrylic on canvas, £250

Her popular seaside paintings have made her one of Great Yarmouth's best-known artists, but it was her three large paintings of Pukka Pies that made the biggest impact at Jane Hall's opening at the Great Yarmouth Art Gallery. Displayed as a triptych, the bright, vibrant acrylic on canvas Pukka Pies paintings dominated the room and were a talking point all evening. Clearly owing an artistic debt to Andy Warhol and his soup cans, Jane's incredibly realistic paintings of these much-loved pies (sold in fish and chip shops throughout Great Yarmouth) show a level of detail and artistic accuarcy that borders on Photorealism.

PUKKA PIES 2 - acrylic on canvas, £100

Also on display at this latest exhibition were two of Jane's more recent ice cream paintings - and she continues to take artistic inspiration from both the seafront and some of Yarmouth's quieter back streets. But her work will be taking a detour next month, as her exhibition of Soho sex shops opens at Reading Room, Frith Street in London. Although she promises to get back to the seaside soon; and even has more plans for Pukka Pies paintings. "The response to the three paintings was amazing," she said. "Especially the big one! Everyone kept saying it looked good enough to eat."
